Audi is extending its highest-volume model series, the Audi A4, with two new models based on its 1.9 TDI e engine. With an output of 115 hp (86 kW), the A4 1.9 TDI e, available as a sedan and as an Avant model, consumes 5.2 l/100km (45 mpg US) and emits 137 g CO 2 /km. The A4 accelerates to 100 km/h in 11.2 seconds and has a maximum speed of 201 km/h (125 mph). The A4 furthermore has high transmission ratios for gears 3 to 6, which contribute to lower fuel consumption. The engine electronics are engineered for economy. Various weight-reduction measures, including an aluminium hood and low-rolling-resistance tires in size 205/55 R16, in addition to aerodynamic features such as the saloon’s integrated S line rear spoiler contribute to the overall efficiency of the package. Audi had earlier introduced a 105 hp (78 kW) 1.9 TDI e application for the A3, with combined fuel consumption of 4.5 l/100km (52 mpg US) and with CO 2 emissions below 120 g/km. Like the Passat, it had a longitudinally-mounted engine and standard front wheel drive, although the vast majority of A4s Audi sells in North America come optioned with their quattro all wheel drive system. The Avant station wagon arrived a year later. A wide range of engines were available to European customers, between 1.6 and 2.8 L, and a 1.9 L Diesel available with VW's new "pumpe-düse" technology, capable of achieving a then high power value of 110 PS (81 kW), although Audi's 2.8 L V6, carried over from the old 80/90 was the only engine option in North America until 1997. The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8 L 20V motor with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car. A turbocharged version produced 150 PS (110 kW) and 210 Nm (155 ft.lbf) of torque. This technology was added to the V6 family in 1996, starting with the 2.8 L V6 30V, which now pumped 193 PS (142 kW). Audi also debuted their new Tiptronic transmission on the B5 platform, based on the unit Porsche developed for their 964-generation 911. The transmission is a "manumatic", meaning it offers the driver a choice of driving the car as either an automatic or a clutchless manual.

Edging out the Ford Sierra as Car of the Year in Europe, the 1983 Audi 100 had a remarkable aerodynamic look, achieving a drag coefficient of 0.30 for its smoothest base model. The increased aerodynamic efficiency resulted in better fuel economy and consumers all over the world were waking up to this fact. This became a great marketing tool for Audi in the 1980s, and marked a huge leap forward from the boxy shape of the C2, as well as the technology it introduced, including the procon-ten safety system. Audi was able to follow up on the modern smooth look first seen in this segment on the 1967 NSU Ro 80 and popularized by the 1974 Citroën CX. This rounded look became the norm by the 1990s. It also set a styling trend of flush wheel covers, a thick black side door moulding and blacked out window frames eventually adopted by a range of cars from the 1984 Honda Accord to the Chrysler K cars. Audi innovated flush windows on the C3, a key area for aerodynamic drag that has been adopted by virtually all manufacturers today. The two-door models were no longer available, and the Audi 100 Avant was reintroduced as Audi's first attempt at a station wagon based on the 100. The 200 continued as the upmarket variant with several versions of the 2.2 L turbo 5-cylinder available in different markets over its life ranging in power outputs from 165 PS (121 kW) MC engine, through the 200 PS (147 kW) versions to the final 220 PS (162 kW) 20-valve 3B engine available from 1990. The 200 20V was distinguished by its flared front and rounded rear wheel arches instead of the flat type used for the rest of the 100-200 range.
